Most of the horses at CW were jumpers and I was stuck on my little dressage horse. But KB is closer to me, has loads of outrides (which is perfect for Daze) and there's a dressage arena that doesn't flood in winter. Another plus is that there's lots of practice shows in Joostenbergvlakte that I can ride to.

Yup. I cantered her down the long side of the arena, and she didn't bomb or anything. I'm now working on perfecting her rein-back. She sometimes walks back skew, so I'm straightening it out. And we've pretty much perfected turn on the forhand. I also got her to do side pass for 5 steps the other day.

If you teach rein-back from the ground, coupled with a voice command, it's much easier once you're on board.

You should basically be able to get them to do any flat work on the ground before you try it ridden. That way, you show the horse "I'll show you: This is what I mean", rather than you saying "You should know this by now!" It's very easy to give incorrect signals when you're onboard. Example: When ask Daze to rein back, I give tiny bit of leg, give the verbal cue "Back", block the forward movement with my hand (don't pull back on the reins; just don't follow the horse's head either) and tip forward slightly (so you'll barely notice) When riding, we're normally taught to sit back a bit and deep, but if you do this, you're telling your horse's quaters to go forward and under them. If you tip forward slightly, you lift the weight of the quarters, so to speak, and open it for the horse to walk back. If you rode this 'traditionally', you wouldn't be opening up the way for backwards movement. This is why you need to train them on the ground to do everything on their own first. Once they know it, if you make a mistake onboard, your horse still knows what it needs to do. It's not both of you standing there, confused, giving conflicting signals.

Won't be able to make it Got Dave over and neither of us drive yet. Besides, Dave is kinda scared of horses, so I'll have very little luck convincing him to come.
