We often buy from Rideaway, thing is to find someone coming out for a visit from the UK then they just mail the items to the person and you pay via ccard, they are very efficient and organised and the person then puts the package in their luggage but thats only for small goods, clothing etc not for saddles and bulky items.

julz, just to kinda let you know, once you factor in shipping and customs and vat, the prices of these things end up being the same as if you had to buy locally. so you see the prices of things overseas and think, wow! thats a good price! but in actual fact once you land it here, its a lot more! for eg: weatherbeeta rain rug heavy one im gonna say 70 pounds caus they range in price from 50-100pounds. postage minimum will be about 30 pounds, so 100pounds in total. so so far R1090.30
now being the item cost over R400, you cannot say it was a gift, so you get nailed by customs. and this is how that works out: for equestrian gear, customs charges 30% so that brings us to: (blanket price= R763.20x 30%) R992.16 + your postage : R327.10 = R1319.26 then customs does this darling little thing when working out the vat. they take the total: R1319.26 and add on 10% =R1451.19 then they times that by 14%=R1654.35
and hey presto, you have ended up paying R1654.35 for a rug that you thought was going to cost you R763.20
this is why i dont order in rugs very often, they are bulky and postage is a nightmare and they rarely cost under R400.

all depends, bridles, jodpurs, boots, the more expensive things i smokkel in in my brother's or his friends bags (i know a lot of ppl who come and go to london) if its big things like saddles, i have to bite the customs bullet.

Travellers are allowed to bring in goods up to the value to R3000 tax/duty free in your baggage when entering SA as per customs rules.
Be careful though, because they're getting quite sticky and if you get caught you could be asked to produce receipts to verify the cost of your items. No receipts and they'll look up the value of the goods online.

Julz even shipping rugs locally can be expensive.
Why not look at the Blue steel or Weatherbeeta stuff? Both of their rainsheets etc are amazing quality.

Britt is right. Jules, I bought in that noseveil and I paid on top of the cost in pounds, postage of 20 pounds plus a further R270 odd for customs VAT and duty.
It is very sad
Anything over R400 you get nailed.
I looked at bringing in a rug, the VAT, duty and transport cost more than the actual rug.

Britt, a quick question. If a friend sends me a gift with a value of 100 punds on it, what sort of custom duty do you thinki I'll be liable for?
