For those of you who know the tokai area, can you give me an idea of what livery costs are in the area and what that includes?

Umm well i live there and looked around for stabling but never ended up moving my horse because it was just too expensive. Uitsig is R5500pm which includes everything, beautiful place, arena's and grass paddocks. Nova Zonnestraal is R7000pm which is also a competitive yard, BEAUTIFUL fascilities but no grass paddocks. Then there aren't very many places with grass paddocks for under R4500. The lowest i found was R3500 and that is a sand paddock and the property doesn't have an arena on it so you have to walk to SHORA. Those cheaper places you generally have to pay for lucern extra if you use. Hope this helps

Thanks Lizzy! My place is in Constantia, but have a friend looking to take over a yard and she is trying to work out if it is worthwhile taking it on and what would be a fair price to charge.

OMG!! R7000 pm, no matter how I love my horses I just could not justify spending that on 1 horse per month, Nova Zonnestraal is amazing though wow that arena! Uitsig is also great but the horses spend half the day inside which isnt great but top care, wow, I am gobsmacked, its way cheaper out North behind the "boerie curtain!!"

Sounds like the same place Lau. I haven't been there before so not able to advise her properly. Good luck with your proposal, hope you come right.

Lol, i am not sure i want to take on the responsibility for such a long period but it could be fun. The property itself is nice, the paddocks are not great but the stables are stunning. And the feed/tack room is nice.
All in all its not bad, just down the road from SHORA and right in the middle of the forrest so no roads if you dont want roads in your ride.

Lizzy, Uitsig is actually more than that now.
Up Swaanswyk Road it ranges from R3500 to about R6000 if that helps. The cheaper ones are sand paddocks, oathay only etc and the more expensive ones have arenas, nicer paddocks and a bit more flexibility in terms of feeding.
To me, the Tokai forest is what makes fork out half my salary every month!

Why is Cape Town so expensive? I just can't justify paying that much for livery, it seems unbelievable to pay R7000 for stabling, really scary.

It has alot to do with the lands rates and what they offer. For instance alot of the upper market yards have infa red lamps in certain stables, amazing arena's, quality grooms that are able to lunge, bandage, plait etc... top quality feed. With the electricity increases i would hate to know how much everything is going to go up by.
I have stables and i charge R1500 basic (for water, electricity, paddock maintenance and a basic groom (who feeds, blankets, picks up manure etc) then feed ontop. It completly depends on the horse and how much it eats, as to how much you pay.
But i must agree R7000 is really really out of most peoples price bracket.

Actually, some parts of Cpt are astronomical. Out in the sticks you pay from 2500pm to about 3500pm excl VAT. I prefer to have my horse in a yard where the horses needs come before the owner / riders needs. I want good feed and care with grooms who really like horses, a nice arena is also needed and I like to be near some-where decent to hack, but I do not need some-one to fetch and tack up my horse, or untack him. I also don't need some-one to turn my horse out for shows. Most expensive places have the bells and whisltes for the rider, but nothing extra for the horses.

I would think that Uitsig and Nova Zonnestraal (and perhaps Sahibi) are the exception to the rule in the area, surely? Even if I had the money I wouldn't want to stable at somewhere like Zonnestraal, I have been there a few times and the horses stand all day in very small sand paddocks and most of the paddocks don't have shade. I don't need to pay R7000 for that privilege.

So true, often those sort of yards are suited to very busy people or those who don't want to do their own tacking up, show prep, tack cleaning, loading and unloading etc. I don't have that kind of money, but if I did I'd be sure it was spend on a yard where the focus was on the horse's comfort (which should be the case everywhere, really). Bee you are right, those NZ paddocks are depressing.

Thing is most people aren't focused on the horses comforts. Horse riding is a very elite sport at the top level and it means something to say your horse is stabled at NZ if you mix with those sort of people. I agree with the comfort thing! Our farm is like that, the livery is cheap because the horses are happy and we don't have the benefits of a fountain in the middle of the stables or a perfect arena but the horses live in HUGE grass paddocks and they are happy!

That is ludicrous. I pay R2200 at my yard in Durban

Hi there My daughter is hoping to move her 15.3h 12yr old gelding down with her when she comes to UCT next year. Can anyone give me any advice on finding stabling for them. Heard that Hout Bay has no outrides so prefer anywhere else. Thanks
