THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW EXPLODES ONTO STAGE AT THE BARNYARD THEATRE
15 July 2009
19h00
Barnyard Theatre, Willowbridge Centre, Durbanville.
Showing is waiting in antici….pation for the return of the world’s most famous rock ‘n roll musical, Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show, to explode onto stage at The Barnyard Theatre on the 15th of July.
The Rocky Horror Show tells the story of the misadventures of Brad Majors and his fiancée Janet Weiss, two hapless virgins from Denton, who lose their way on a dark and stormy night. On the way to visit an old college professor, they run into tyre trouble and seek help at the site of a light down the road. It's coming from the Frankenstein place where Dr Frank N Furter, a transvestite from the planet Transexual in the galaxy of Transylvania, is in the midst of one of his maniacal experiments. Frank has created the perfect man, a rippling piece of beefcake christened Rocky Horror and intends to put him to good use (his own). The kinky household retinue is presided over by a hunchback henchman named Riff Raff and his incestuous sister Magenta, assisted by a tap dancing groupie-in-residence, Columbia. Although virtue is compromised and finally lost on that fateful night, good finally triumphs over evil.
The Rocky Horror Show has enjoyed a colourful track record in South Africa and the film was banned after four weeks on circuit. When Richard O’Brien created the science fiction spoof musical in 1972, his only vision was a filler show at London’s Royal Court Theatre in Sloane Square, which would provide him and a few friends with some employment.
The Rocky Horror Show features the hit songs Time Warp, Hot Patootie, Damn it Janet and Sweet Transvestite, and was made into the hit movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show featuring Susan Sarandon (Janet), Meatloaf (Eddie) and Richard O’Brien himself (as Riff Raff).
Barnyard patrons are encouraged to pack up their party packs and don their finest Rocky get-up (see www.barnyardtheatre.co.za for tips and information) to become the final cast member in this hit show.
