FYI
Dear All,
I recently sent out information that I am gathering details from anyone who might be interested in attending a three year course under the auspices of Philippe Karl, should we be able to set one up. Since I wrote that e-mail in the last few days, I have had personal communication from Monsieur Karl which now makes this more than a matter of research and takes it into the real realms of possibility. Please help me to make this happen as it is for the good of us all and the good of all our horses.
I had broached this subject in a letter to him, although I had expected that I would have to give him more information before I heard a response in the affirmative. However, he is more than happy to consider running a course in South Africa should committed parties and applications be of a good number and of good quality. He has therefore asked that applications be gathered.
At this stage he will only consider "riding instructors/teachers - either full time or part time". However, I do wish to discuss this with him in greater detail. I would urge you to apply even if you may wish to teach at a later date or on completion of the course. Please state this in your application. Please also pass this on to any teachers or instructors who you would like to see take up this opportunity.
Anyone who teaches riding is welcome to apply and you may come from any riding discipline - you do not have to specialise in dressage although we want to encourage dressage trainers to apply. You do not need a special horse although access to more than one is advisable should your horse fall ill or become injured during the three year period that the course covers.
It may of course be possible to be sponsored by someone or for you to take on a horse for an owner - the horses on which you take part do not have to be your own horses but they will need to be trained by you.
At this stage we can not state in which locations the courses might be held and of course there are issues to discuss regarding possible movement restrictions during AHS outbreaks. However, we need applicants and this is the priority for now. I will be attending another of Monsieur Karl's clinics in December and will take any applications that I receive to him in person to ensure their delivery. Even if you do not manage to get your application to me by then, please still send it to me - preferably by registered post and I will send batches on to him by DHL courier. It is important that these applications reach him safely. If you include or confirm your e-mail address with your application I will inform you when I receive your completed documents and keep in touch with you.
Please read the following requirements carefully and do not miss anything out. We do not know costs yet, but please estimate in the region of R20,000 per year. This is based on current fees but it may vary with exchange rates and the economy. It does not include accommodation of horse and rider or any additional fees such as arena hire although if someone applying to participate wishes to donate facilities or offer the use of them at a reduced rate this would be most gratefully received. An indoor arena will be required. Please see it as an investment in your training and the chance to teach, should you qualify, under the name of Philippe Karl. There is a final exam and the course would be for certification as a Philippe Karl Instructor. The course would be conducted by Monsieur Karl, one of his best teachers or a combination of both. It would be his intention to facilitate the final exam.
The courses are comprised of ten clinics over three years, usually four days each and students must attend all clinics. Listeners are also welcome for a much reduced fee, but they must also be committed to attending all courses over the three year period. Even if you only wish to be a listener - please forward your commitment and details, answering as many of the questions (outlined below) as possible and as applicable to you. You do not have to be a teacher to attend as a listener and do not have to submit a DVD.
More details will be given once we have collected applications and Monsieur Karl has had a chance to consider all the details and information supplied. Information is usually announced on his web-site but in the interim I will correspond and keep in touch with all applicants. You can find a copy of the European Application also on the web-site - www.philippekarl.com. Please visit the site for more details about Monsieur Karl and the courses that he currently runs.
Application documents:
(Please note: exclusively in English or French!)
curriculum vitae including a passport photograph
letter explaining your motivation
completed questionnaire on your teaching experience (see below)
DVD showing your work with your horses and demonstrating your riding skills.
Do not forget to clearly indicate your favourite locations: the new teachers' courses would most likely take place in either Gauteng or the Western Cape.
How many new courses can be created, and where, will depend on the number of applications and other organizational issues. Earliest start date estimated 2011.
Please note that one of the conditions for a successful application is that you should already have some experience in teaching, even if only part-time. Please describe your teaching experience in detail by filling out the following questionnaire.
Questionnaire on your teaching experience
Are you a riding teacher? Since when?
Do you give lessons regularly?
How many riding students do you have per week? Per month?
Are you teaching in a riding club? If yes, in which one?
Are you salaried? Self-employed?
Do you give clinics? If yes, where?
Do you have owners' horses to ride?
Do you train horses?
Do you take riding lessons yourself? If yes, with whom? how often?
Ideally, you should have several horses at your disposal, in case one of them falls ill.
With the signature of the training contract, you commit yourself to following the teachers' course for the whole of its duration (i.e. three years).
Please send your application in writing along with your DVD to the following address:

I would be grateful if you could e-mail me your intentions so that I can also look out for your applications. Please use tamasine@naturalhorsemanship.co.za
Advanced training courses - to be discussed should a three year course take place in RSA
If they wish, the licensed instructors of the School of Légèreté can improve their knowledge beyond the basic training by participating in advanced training courses. These take place as three-day clinics three times a year. Instructors who follow all three clinics per year will be awarded a yearly certification, which will be published on the website.
Whereas the listeners of the three-year teachers' course have to commit themselves for the whole three years, just like the riders, the advanced traning courses for the licensed instructors are open for listeners at any time.
The programme includes the training of the riders in dressage, work in hand, longeing, jumping and giving lessons, both to their own students and to unknown guest riders. The practical lessons in the riding hall are complemented by a comprehensive theory lecture which leaves room for questions and comments.
