I use Vincent or Jamilia but they're struggling to get shavings at the moment. I'll pm you the numbers later if you need them

Bee, I phoned a lot of places around the Cape (saw mills, wood manufacturers etc) for misty and like she said there is not much going at the moment.
I found a guy in Natal who has a constant supply of pine wood shavings and supplies stables yards in his area. The shavings are free but getting it to the Cape is the problem and expensive part...

Thanks guys, I think I have phoned everyone supplier I know and no-one has in stock. What other viable options are there? Anything else besides straw? (or horses sleeping out

Bee I found a supplier of shredded paper which sounds very reasonable (a 200kg bale if memory is correct). I researched this as an option and it seems it is a good one.
According to what I found: It is as absorbent as shavings, decomposes faster and is more environmentally friendly, doesnt get eaten, doesnt stick as much to the horse, apparently is not dusty, and a whole lot more.
I am seriously thinking of getting a bale and trying it, even if I mix it with whatever shavings I can get. I have one problem in Firlands and that is the wind!! Can get you the contact details if you want.

Thanks Misty, that would be great! Is it financially feasible using paper in comparison to the (high) cost of shavings at the moment.
Sounds like a good alternative!

Bee have forwarded the quote to you on email. It is R1.06/kg for a 200kg bale - sounds reasonable.
