Just an aside on Souther Subs prices ... I commented in a SS tack shop on the high price of a towel with horsies printed on it(R130-nice horsy pic but terrible quality towel)....that it's not too expensive for Lane parents. ( the stub rolled off me!) Here's possibly the issue - do you pay of does mom and dad pay? I do hear there's few nice , not over priced yards Tokia/Constantia. Just aks how wet it get's in winter. A fw people moved from Philipi to Constatia due to driving time but I know of at least 2 taht has since moved back.

I have my horses at home and i used to do livery. Personally i was charging R1500 basic (that is 24/7 365 days a year job) which if you split up to a daily rate its just less that R50 per day to care for someone elses horse. That would be water electricity, rent, blanketing feeding, picking up manure, bandaging, and general care (which usually goes way beyond what normal yards would do as i treat the horses as my own)... it just was'nt worth it. I can see why yards charge an arm and a leg, it is bloody hard work. Yet im not willing to rip people off as i know what a struggle it is each month to afford horses and i have mine at home which reduces costs in a huge way.
Even with me charging R1500 basic the feed generally makes costs go to around R2800- R3000 per month depending on the horse, that is without farrier and vet.

As for the SS versus phillipi versus NS, i dont actually think there is any comparison. Every place has its benefits. Personally i have my horses in the back garden there are LOADS of safe rides on my doorstep (vineyards, forrest fields etc....). The NS has huge open spaces and costs alot less. Phillipi dosent appeal to *me* but it does have its pro's too.
Each to their own.

My horses do not stand in small sand paddock but actually in very large grass paddocks alot bigger than a most of the yards in Phillip. My horses go out at 8am and come in a 5pm after a full day of grazing and walking around in A MASSIVE paddock...not all the yard in Tokai have small sand paddocks.... In one visit to a yard out there I stop to pic up 2 dog and a horse that was lying on the side of the road... may I went on a bad day.... Uitsig stables are rented from the farm owners at a very LARGE monthly fee so you guys are right they don't pay rates just rent. I am happy where I am and have everything that makes my horses happy and I'm sure you are all happy where you are otherwise I'm sure you wouldn't stable there.

I think were all pretty luck to #1 have a horse and #2 be able to afford them - wherever you stable. Hope lolita finds something that suits her.

Taryn, you are right, there are yards in SS that have grass paddocks, very few though and you and Laura are amongst the few.
Anyway everyone to their own

I paid R2800 in JHB at one of the best yards excl vet and farrier - they had paddocks in grass and 3 arena's and jumps and cross country course, a 1km excercise track, grooming and basically everything i see as standard. I paid less at Saxons - with top notch care.
To find what I am use too in JHB here in CTN is impossible it seems - I have opted for care cos facilities AND care is not available.

I agree, we are very lucky to own horses and I'm sure we all do the best we can for our babies... it pob doesn't even matter to our horses how much we spend on them anyway all they ask for is basic needs and lots of love...
