After doing some more homework on Centred Riding, I have booked a lesson. It seems extremely interesting and can help all riders, irrespective of your preffered discipline. Here are some more details: Centered Riding is simply a new way of expressing the classical principles of riding. It answers the question of "how", when the riding instructor tells you "what" to do to communicate with your horse. It applies equally to all english and western riding disciplines. How does it work? Many people are caught in the trap of unconcious habitual habit. Their bodies know only the old habitual way of movement. Centered Riding, with simplicity and logic, allows you to discover an inner balance, serenity and control that in turn gives you greater freedom of movement, suppleness and coordination. These new qualities are reflected in your horse as increased balance, poise and forward motion. You and your horse become as one, in harmony. The four basics of Centered Riding Centered Riding's foundation is built on the Four Basics: • Soft Eyes allow a greater field of vision, increased awareness of your own and your horse's body, less tension and easier, freer forward movement. • Proper Breathing also reduces tension in your body, helps to lower your center of gravity and allows the horse to become quieter and more responsive while reducing your fatigue. • Centering takes you to your center of control and energy deep in the lower body. This also allows your seat to be stable and secure. Centering releases tensions that block the flow of energy through your body and leaves you ready for the next movement or exercise. • Building Blocks aligns your body and gives you true and consistent balance over your horse's center of gravity which encourages the fluid and comfortable movement of your horse. www.centeredriding.org/Spaces are still available for Wed 19th and Thurs 20th November

IC read up here www.centeredriding.org/and the story of Sally - this lady is now 95years old!!!!!! Sally Swift, founder of Centered Riding® Inc., was born in 1913 and grew up in Hingham, Massachusetts, just south of Boston. At seven years old, a scoliosis appeared which has been part of her life ever since. After the diagnosis and into her twenties, she worked with Mabel Ellsworth Todd, author of The Thinking Body. So Sally's body awareness and centering started at an early age. Graduating from school, she taught riding for the next twelve years before moving on into other fields. Retiring from the American Holstein Association at 62, she planned to teach riding again "to a few of my friends". This was the beginning of Centered Riding®. As she developed her techniques and the four basics of Centered Riding®, the demand for Centered Riding® clinics and Instructor clinics blossomed and soon her teaching activities were taking her all over the United States as well as to Canada, Australia and Europe. Sally has now semi-retired, but is still very active within Centered Riding. She recently began writing articles for Centered Riding’s monthly eNewsletter. She is using her experience in "centering" and "use of self" techniques in new areas such as singers and physical therapists as they help their clients. Her book Centered Riding , now a classic, was published in 1985 and recently celebrated its twentieth year in print in 2005. It's been translated into fifteen languages (in 2008, Korean became the fifteenth language) and has sold over 700,000 copies worldwide. In 1986, Sally produced two videos Centered Riding: Tape 1 and Centered Riding: Tape 2, which are readily available now in both VHS and DVD formats. A second book, Centered Riding 2: Further Exploration was published in 2002 and is following in its predecessor's footsteps with nine foreign language editions and 100,000 copies sold worldwide.. The books and videos are available in many tack shops or can be ordered by contacting the Centered Riding ® Office. Centered Riding ® , Inc. P.O. Box 157 Perkiomenville , PA 18074 office@centeredriding.org 610-754-0633 / Fax 610-754-0634 In the last eighteen years, Sally has been working with the Alexander Technique which has enabled her to discard the back brace she had worn for ten years. The Alexander Technique is a method of re-educating the mind and body towards greater balance and integration with special reference to posture and movement. The Technique has not changed any of her basic principles but has added significantly to the depth and subtlety of her teaching. Over the past twelve years, Sally has developed an instructor program which is now taught by the Level IV Instructors who either apprenticed directly with Sally (1986 - 1991) or with at least two Level IV instructors. See the Instructors' Page for more information about Centered Riding® Instructors and how to become one. In November 2006, Sally Swift was inducted into the United States Dressage Federation’s Hall of Fame. Inclusion into the USDF Hall of Fame is bestowed on individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of dressage in the U.S. through their creativity, originality, vision and sustained effort. In April 2008, Sally celebrated her 95th birthday with family, friends, neighbors and supporters of Centered Riding. Donations in excess of $3,000 were made to Centered Riding in Sally’s honor. In June of 2008, Sally was honored with the Seventh Annual Equine Industry Vision Award in recognition of having a revolutionary impact on horseback riding word wide in the twentieth century. Sally was honored as a true visionary whose legendary work will continue to impact the equine world long beyond her years.
