Does anyone know of companies that transport horses from other countries to SA? I need to find out how much it costs... I know it's expensive, but I need to know HOW expensive.
Any info ASAP would be appreciated.

As far as I know you are looking at between 40 and 80k per horse depending on where it comes from and how many horses are coming in with it. You also have to pay for quarantine etc and they have to be quarantined on each side for 6 weeks sometimes more this side if horses come in during your horses quarantine period...

it really depends how far the horse is coming from, to and from which countries, the quarantine involved etc.... like a horse coning from somewhere in Africa will be alot cheaper than a horse coming from overseas... well obviously.... You can call an International travel company they will be able to tell you anything you need to know

A client of mine brought her 2 horses out from the UK (probably 2 years ago now) and she paid R80k for each horse - I assume that included the cost of quarintine aswell.

There are two companies that do it, one is Brian Roux or BBR Transport (011 469 3996) and the other is Kevin Connelly or CTB International Bloodstock Forwarding (011 646 5413). The both are very experienced international horse transporters. Brian Roux is normally the more preferred transporter of the racing industry. Normally they charter a plane from a specific place and you get a slot, it is normally cheaper (per horse) to take a whole pallet that is 3 horses than just one stall, or, at least, that is what I have been told.

I've also heard (not sure of the facts) that Candice Hobday has started a transport business. I don't have contact details for you, but maybe you can get them from THS?
A plane ticket from Europe is around R80k. Added costs are the quarantine (which is usually about the cheapest of the lot), import tax (14%) and then the actual transport company you have to pay as well - often they work on a % of the purchase price, ie 10% or whatever. A friend who imported a horse from Germany last year, paid around 45k Euro for the horse, and she says that with all of that added on, you can bargain on about double the purchase price to get the horse here.
