This year I have decided to register my daughter's pony, Presty. What would be a good, relaxed venue for her first graded show? My choices are: Mountain View, The Manor, Northern Farm, Fourways, Sowet Classic. Bear in mind I am coming from Walkerville, south of Joburg. Any other suggestions?

My choices are: Mountain View, I've not been there, but heard from friends that it is a lovely venue Don't know it. Pretty venue, but the arenas can be quite deep. Very popular children's venue and Marion always builds nicely. Not great as a first outing. Very busy, can almost be a bit frenetic, and the arenas seldom run to order because riders are riding all over the place and come in out of order. Sunlands is always lovely, and she really understands kids. Penny Place (used to be Chistleton) is also a wonderful venue and Trevor puts on quite a show.

Fourways is always a nice show and well organised. I would miss Soweto Classic for first year, it is hectic!
On another note, can anyone tell me where Mountain View is?

Witkoppen also is a nice venue.
I think Mountain view is in Nooitgedacht - near Lammermoor?

Another question - how do I get a SANEF height certificate? And how long are they valid for?

Our vet did ours. If your pony is older than 7 I think it is a permanent one, younger than that it is temorary, not sure how often it needs to be done. I think it's on the GHS website somewhere.

I'm at most of the shows on the circuit in JHB. I agree with Saxon and the venues she listed. Penny Place, Fourways RC and Sunlands are the best for kids. I would recommend Sunlands for a first show though as they have very large warm up arenas and tend to sympathise more with kiddies who get nervous. I remember last year a gate Marshall was reassuring a little girl that I knew with a very naughty pony. I thought that was very nice of her especially since she was trying to round up two dozens galloping kids at the same time for a the same class. The manor is a good venue too and a slight bit closer to walkerville. Norman Datnow did a height certificate for Sabby's passport. He took his time to get to me but he was also R200 cheaper than the vet I have living down the road from me. Good Luck b! Must be nerve wrecking having your child compete, I secretly hope Liam prefers soccer to be hinest

Thanks all. One more question: can children wear gaiters?
