Okay - I have never been to the Derby but have the opportunity to go and watch this year. Now to all the native GHS people - is it worth it? Also just in general what is the weekend like?? ta

I strongly suggest you go! I love the Derby! It's so exciting to watch.
It is THE horse event of the year in SA. You need to book your tickets early and make sure you arrive early to get a good seat. The stands are packed to the hilt on the Sunday.

It is the only show to go to in SA!
There is always loads of top class competition to watch throughout Derby weekend which includes a wide variety of disciplines. The atmosphere on Derby day is something else and the events in the main arena is very entertaining, from the driving carousel to the complete horse free test to the main event. The stands are packed and everyone always has a great time.

SO SO worth it. pack a picnic basket, go early, get good seats (I recommend halfway up the bleachers, directly facing the devils dyke) and stay for the entire day. take pillows for your bum the Sunday is definitely the day to go. no need to book tickets, arrive early, get tickets at the gate. word of advice, take a loo/food break before the last event of the day starts (big derby class). the seats are jam-packet which makes it hard to get up and down

Its so worth it I was going to be riding in the smaller classes but silly Leapy gave himself a concussion two weeks ago so we've had to take things back to basics to get him going again.

First week/weekend October.
Personally, I avoided Derby - went for many years but the novelty wore off. If you have never been you'll enjoy it tho.

So worth it. I always go for the full five days, but I have a trial on the Friday this year, so won't make that day. It's an awesome show.
