It's not really judging, but voicing opinions from people who really care about animlas.... the people who emmigrate should deal with a few stray comments - they have a choice, unlike their animals who will either go through a stressfull re-homing process or PTS....just because their owners now choose a differnt place to stay.
I don't mind getting the constant re-homing mails - at least it's giving those animlas a chance and show the owners care. Only sick and really old animlas should be considered for PTS
and people who emmigrate should include in their budgets their animals travel !
Will the greener grass be worth it??

well said hayls - for me if i decided to go overseas and could not take my animals with me for whatever reason they would all be put to sleep. There is no question in my mind, my animals are part of my family they are my children, just like i could never leave my child with another family if i had to move overseas i would never be able to do that to my animals. i will always try to help rehome any animal that needs it, but i just wish for once people woudl take the responsibility of their animals and do what is correct for them. they want to be with you not any tom dick and harry that happened to recieve an email about them looking for a home.
i have just read this mail from a lady about this very topic and think she put it together very well: Send in by Tracey Pace
To all pet owners emigrating, I am so tired of all the pleading emails and advertisements for the people staying in South Africa to adopt your pets. I am so tired of hearing how you love them so much and it’s tearing you apart to leave them behind but you cannot bear for them to be in quarantine for 6 months. Why don’t you just admit that you actually don’t want to pay for them to go with you, that you are too just too mean and you are taking the easy way out? Why don’t you admit that something more important than them has come up and they are completely dispensable because you will just replace them with “another little darling” when you are all settled in your new country and will not spare them a second thought.
You are advertising for any stranger to come along and take your “little darling” off your hands because it’s best for them but you just want to see the back of these animals who have given you unconditional love from day one so that your conscience is clear. Animals do emigrate with their loving owners and stay in quarantine for 6 months and are completely fine and live a happy life with their families in their new countries but these seem to few and far between with the number of advertisements around. I have friends who have taken their dogs to New Zealand and other friends who have taken their cats to Australia with no problems and they coped perfectly well and have moved on and are happy at home now.
There are so many abandoned animals in this country without you contributing to the problem. I run a cattery and people leave their cats with me for 3 to 6 months. Cats and dogs do not have a sense of time and accept the situation very well, I don’t see why they would not cope with quarantine in the UK, New Zealand or Australia which is very well run and the facilities are fantastic. Look what happened to all the animals left in Zimbabwe when everyone made a run for it. Shame on you for leaving these poor creatures behind without a second thought and making your problem someone else’s problem.

You know some people aren't rich. as as she said THEY ARE STRUGGLING Right now. No you dont have to be rich but after everything you've paid can you honestly get to where ever move into a house with a big garden?
Esp in the UK there is alot of flats and big gardens dont come cheap.
Hayls NOT ALL pets can cope with flying etc and some dogs do not recover very well. My dog flew down from JHB and almost 3 years ago, SHe still has not recovered and i highly doubt she will ever. Besides the fact that some dogs yes can be rehomed but do you think its easy for the owners just to say goodbye?
Kels i think zimbabwe was slightly different as in you only had 2 days to leave but i dont think leaving your pets was clever either. We smuggled in our cats ( yes we broke the law you think i care? Its better than having them hacked to death.)
Thus saying all that i dont think its wise just to jump on peoples heads and if i was in those shoes with my animals they would sadly be put to sleep because they are comepletely unrehome-able and are vicious.

Ok I see Hayls point, I also disagree with people making it their last priority... BUT alot of the time people who are emmigrating are doing it because they cannot find work here and are already up to their eye-balls in debt!!

I just have to put my THREE CENTS WORTH HERE!?!?! The first thing that i have to ask is that how many people here have emmigrated! I know i have just but others? It is really scary. At the moment we are putting Star my rhodesian Ridgeback to sleep as she is not good with children and has only ever lived with us. she did not pass her vetting check as she was SIMPLY TOO OLD!! we love her dearly and she was my first dog. We also have just spent £500000 on a house that fits into my garage back at home that has a garden 6mx4m and is on the outskirts of london! DO NOT TELL ME THAT WE ARE BEING INCONCIDERATE! we have looked at all the options and it is just not FAIR on the dogs. I am bringing one of my dogs - Phirrelli the jack russel - accross and that is costing £2500 - And that is for the cheaper end! ##Try it first before you comment please!

Wow Icehorse you must have a nice house as I also own a house on the outskirts of London and it did not cost me that much!! Plus its in a real nice area. I agree with you that it costs a fortune and not everyone has the money to pay out for moving their animals. I see both sides...

Icehorse I hear what you are saying but I am sorry I will never think its fair to destroy an animal because YOU have decided to move and go and live in a different country and because your animals are either too old or its too expensive or the animal doesnt get along with children etc so cannot go with you. Animals are supposed to be for life. I think this is what bothers me most. A lifelong committment.
But I am NOT judging as I have no right and I am not in your position but this is my opinion which I am entitled to. You cant ask her what she wants but I am pretty sure if you could she would not say please put me to sleep. Unfortunately as pet owners we have to make decisions that are not always easy and we try to make the right ones for the wellbeing of our beloved pets but these decisions are normally based on ill health or old age where quality of life is no longer possible. The decision to destroy an animal who is still healthy, full of life and with many years of happiness and joy ahead of them is one that troubles me deeply and I pray to God every day that I am never in a position where I cannot provide for my animals because I simply do not know what I would do.
But having said that, when you buy an animal it becomes your responsibility and you have to do what you consider to be right. No one else can tell you what is right or wrong or has the right to judge you unless what you are doing is actual abuse.
