The Young Horse Performance Series is being run again this year. There are three classes, a 5yo class, 6yo class and 7yo class and the following rules apply:
The horse will compete in the age group that he was in as at 1 January 2008. So, a horse who was 5 on that date will compete with the 5yos, even if he turned 6 on 2 January.
Each class is run over two rounds. The first round is judged on two levels:
2.1 A normal showjumping round, with penalties being incurred for poles and/or refusals. Each competitor starts on 40 points and loses points for poles, etc.
2.2 The first round is also judged by two judges, who will mark the horse for technique, scope and rideability. These marks are then tallied and the winner of the “Performance” section is the horse who has the most points.
3 Each competitor, regardless of his score, will “jump off” in a second class, which is not judged on technique. The winner of the “jumping” section is the horse who gets the highest points, in the fastest time.
4 The series is open to horses of all breeds and genders, BUT owners must possess a valid passport to determine age.
At each leg, a “winner’s numnah” is given to the leading 5yo, 6yo and 7yo and this remains with the horse until such time as it is overtaken in the standings. At the end of the series, trophies are awarded to:
- the winning jumper (on pure showjumping)
- the best “performance horse” (judged as aforesaid)
- the breeder of the best “performance horse” (if local)
Last year, these trophies were handed out at Derby.
It really is a fun series to attend, and the organizers have particularly tried to make it ‘baby friendly’ by making courses welcoming for the young horses, and the venues as friendly as possible. It was great fun last year. If anyone wants to know when the next legs will be, I’ll email you, but it would be great to see some of you at the nextleg. I think they’ll also take late entries on the day.
